Chris Luka, contemporary Dutch visual artist

Chris Luka is an Amsterdam-based artist, with an extensive body of knowledge and experience as a creative in the advertising industry. Yet his free work, his imaginative drawings and paintings, is where he can truly express himself. He is fully autodidact, not limited to the usual constraints of the art world. When he sets brush to paper he gets into a flow, unaware of space and time. This translates to how his art is oftentimes experienced; there’s a tranquil, meditative feel to it. Triggering a felt sense with the viewer.

Luka is overtly curious about all that surrounds him: constantly looking and reading up on philosophy, design, (human) nature, culture and science. He’s traveled the globe, living in Sydney, New York and Cape Town (where part of his family lives) before settling in The Netherlands. All these various influences pour back into his work, but never in a fixed way.

His choice of materials are subtle watercolours paired with acrylic inks, charcoal, fineliners, gold thread and gold-leaf. His strong signature linework is very recognisable. Luka’s aesthetic is once playful and poetic, then sharp, slightly sensual and layered.

His work has generated significant (inter)national recognition in the pas 2 years.
The lineup for shows & exhibitions 2023 will follow soon.

The Artist’s philosophy

‘We just don’t have enough information about life in general to be pessimistic. Art is a worthy reason to practice the opposite. She is a safe and peaceful deity to worship because of her naturally subjective nature. No flag, no set colours, no borders or restrictions. By looking close enough meaning will emerge from her countless forms of expression. To me she’s a profound indicator of the good that is and will be.’
